weather radarWeather Radar: Principles and Advanced Applications (Physics of Earth and Space Environments) (Hardcover)
"Meischner’s book successfully merges meteorological and technological aspects of weather radar into a meaningful discourse of theory and application. Weather Radar is an assortment of important radar-related topics … . This is a book for radar engineers and weather radar users … interested in concepts of multispectral analysis or polarization or sensor combinations or severe weather systems … . Sections of the book provide excellent discussions of flood forecasting and precipitation measurements in mountainous terrain or in cold climates." (Randy Steadham, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, November, 2005) Weather
Radar by Peter Meischner Weather radar systems provide data necessary for the understanding of weather systems, improved forecasts (especially critical for severe weather), hydrological applications, flood warnings and also for climate research in which ground verification is needed for global precipitation measurements by satellites. This book offers an accessible overview of advanced methods, applications and modern research from the European perspective. An extensive introductory chapter summarizes the principles of weather radars and discusses the potential of modern radar systems, including Doppler and polarisation techniques, data processing, and error-correction methods. Addressing both specialist researchers and nonspecialists from related areas, this book will also be useful for graduate students planning to specialize in this field.
The Doppler Radar, unlike conventional radars, can detect reflectivity,
velocity and spectrum width. It helps in collecting correct information about
the volume of precipitation an area or region is likely to receive in a given
time frame. All weather radars send out radio waves from an antenna. Objects in
the air raindrops, snow crystals, hailstones or even insects and dust scatter or
reflect some of the radio waves back to the antenna. see some radar dopple images view the following DVD:

Enter the core of nature's most mystifying storms with meteorologist Dr. Josh Wurman and his elite crew of storm chasers. Join Wurman as he guides his team into the tornado epicenter to gather new data for the advancement of tornado science. Using innovative, state-of-the-art equipment including a portable Doppler radar, scientific probes and a tornado intercept vehicle, Josh and his teammates send these scientific instruments into the heart of a twister to gather information that may improve forecasting, prevent millions of dollars in damage and save thousands of lives.
