| The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 MPH, but may vary from stationary to 70 MPH. |
| Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land. |
| Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water. |
| Tornadoes are most frequently reported east of the Rocky Mountains during spring and summer months. |
| Peak tornado season in the southern states is March through May; in the northern states, it is late spring through early summer. |
| Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., but can occur at any time. |
Be alert to changing weather conditions.

If you see approaching storms or any of the danger signs, be prepared to take shelter immediately.

| A structure (e.g. residence, small building, school, nursing home, hospital, factory, shopping center, high-rise building) | Go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Do not open windows. |
| A vehicle, trailer, or mobile home | Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy, nearby building or a storm shelter. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes. |
| The outside with no shelter | Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your
hands. Be aware of the potential for flooding. Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location. Never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas in a car or truck. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter. Watch out for flying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes most fatalities and injuries. |

Safety is a primary issue, as are mental and physical well-being. If assistance is available, knowing how to access it makes the process faster and less stressful.
How to Implement a High Security Shelter IN THE HOME by Joel M. Skousen. SUMMARY: The book, which includes full architectural drawings, covers design, layout, construction, ventilation, filtration, 12v lighting, escape exits, water tanks, sanitation, solar electric systems plus controls and wiring, EMP protection, radios, antennas, radiation meters and effects, concealment, stockpiling and barter Lists, plus a new updated list of Equipment Sources. over 100 pgs including plans. The plans include architectural details reinforced masonry walls and ceiling, the vault door installation. and complete instructions covering all other major systems, including electrical and plumbing notes. The shelter is designed for the do-it-yourself handyman and uses conventional materials that are readily available. The 2009 edition modifies the ceiling construction of the safe room to utilize steel decking instead of plywood forms to support the CMU block over the ceiling. The plans are designed for the person who wants to add such a secure room or shelter to an existing home or basement, but can be modified to accommodate new construction, by replacing the concrete block construction with poured cement. There is also a new chapter on Fortifying a Closet--focusing on the hardening of a typical master bedroom walk-in closet for security. Focus is on using existing structure.
Check for injuries.
Do not attempt to move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of death or further injury.
If you must move an unconscious person, first stabilize the neck and
back, then call for help immediately.
| If the victim is not breathing, carefully position the victim for artificial respiration, clear the airway, and commence mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. |
| Maintain body temperature with blankets. Be sure the victim does not become overheated. |
| Never try to feed liquids to an unconscious person. |
| Be aware of exhaustion. Don’t try to do too much at once. Set priorities and pace yourself. Get enough rest. |
| Drink plenty of clean water.. Eat well.. Wear sturdy work boots and gloves. |
| Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water often when working in debris. |
| Be aware of new safety issues created by the disaster. Watch for washed out roads, contaminated buildings, contaminated water, gas leaks, broken glass, damaged electrical wiring, and slippery floors. |
| Inform local authorities about health and safety issues, including chemical spills, downed power lines, washed out roads, smoldering insulation, and dead animals. |

This show was exceptionally well done. Tasteful, informative and it sparked my interest on learning more about events such as the Tri State Tornado, which was just devastating and bizarre. The refreshing thing about this show is it took a break from the "tornado chaser" mentality and instead gave a graphic description with eye witness accounts, pictures and footage of some of the most catastrophic tornados to hit the U.S. since record keeping started. |

shelter plans WHY spend $40,000 on a commercial fallout shelter??? I'm sure
you are aware that a shelter to fit your needs can be built by you or a
contractor for far cheaper and will be just as effective, if not more
effective... Remember that Fallout and Blast shelters are currently being built
at the rate they were during the height of the Cold War... All plans are in this
easy to use booklet... Many of these shelters are effective tornado shelters as
well as effective fallout and bomb shelters!!!
